Purpose

This course covers all the process, equipment and materials that are frequently used in oil well cementing, the central objectives of cementing in oil well construction, zonal isolation, and remedial cementing. Key aspects that will be discussed are: Portland cement and its main constituent phases; Manufacturing of Portland Cement; API Classification System of the Portland cement; Additives that are commonly used in the process; Rheology and density of well cement slurries; Mud removal; Gas migration in well cementing and its solutions; Fluid loss control; Foamed cement, advantages of its application in well cementing; High temperature Chemistry of Portland cement, HPHT wells; The strength retrogression problem; Cement evaluation logs, and sonic-type tools (CBL/VDL).

This course is mainly addressed to Drilling Engineers, Facilities Engineers, Production Operators, and all personnel responsible of oil and gas production wells.

You will learn

  • Know and understand the process and the main objective of cementing in the oil well construction.
  • Become familiar with the common cementing materials used in well construction: Portland cement and its phases, manufacturing aspects, and API classification system.
  • Know and understand the additives commonly used in the oil well cementing process.
  • Understand the importance of the cement slurry rheology, and critical aspects in oil well cementing process, as mud removal, gas migration, and fluid loss control.
  • Be familiar with foamed cement in well cementing.
  • Know how to avoid the strength retrogression problem in the Portland cement, related with HPHT wells.
  • Know and understand the use of the main sonic tools in the evaluation of a cementation
